Seminal Contribution to Disaster Risk Reduction (DRR) Curriculum Development Acknowledged in UN Report!

A UNICEF/UNESCO Contributing Paper in the just-published Global Assessment Report on Disaster Risk Reduction 2015 – the document informing the deliberations of the March 2015 UN World Conference on Disaster Risk Reduction, Sendai, Japan – acknowledges the seminal contribution of Sustainability Frontiers to DRR curriculum, teaching and learning developments globally.

Two key publications have informed that contribution.  The first, Disaster Risk Reduction in School Curricula: Case Studies from Thirty Countries, published by UNICEF and UNESCO in 2012, is described as a ‘seminal document’ (p.2). The second, Towards a Learning Culture of Safety and Resilience: Technical Guidance for Integrating Disaster Risk Reduction in the School Curriculum, published by UNESCO and UNICEF in 2014, is described as ‘an excellent resource, reviewed, used and advocated for use in practice and research contexts focused on risk reduction and resilience education curriculum development, implementation, delivery and evaluation’ (p.20). Taken together these two documents are widely sourced as ‘the basis for assertions and recommendations’. ‘Consultations with some of the main actors in this area,’ writes the author, Kevin Ronan, ‘cite these two documents as foundational’ (p.20).
