Fumiyo Kagawa and David Selby have authored the 2023 Flagship Report on Climate Change and Education in Emergencies as commissioned by the Geneva Global Hub for Education in Emergencies.
The Geneva Global Hub for Education in Emergencies (EiE Hub) is a thriving alliances of some 44 diverse member organizations all committed to prioritising and redoubling the impact of education in emergency contexts. The EiE Hub ‘promotes policy dialogue, multi-stakeholder synergies and partnerships, and inspires political and financial commitments to ensure the delivery and continuity of safe, quality education to crisis-affected children and youth’.
Recognizing the critical nature of the climate crisis threatening children and youth right to education in particular in crisis settings, the Hub commissioned Fumiyo and David to write a 2023 report exploring the nexus between climate change and education in emergencies. The report’s full title is: Leveraging Education in Emergencies for Climate Action. No Time to Lose: Commit to Resilience and Learning Now.
The report aims to:
- Highlight how climatic and environmental breakdown are compounding, exacerbating and multiplying risks
- Examine the impacts of rapid- and slow-onset climate-induced hazards and shocks on EiE
- Identify ways EiE is responding to climatic and environmental challenges, while flagging new directions the sector might take in the future in responding to changes to the climate and environment
- Identify ways to build more robust and resilient education systems that are better equipped to withstand crises
The research employed desk-based literature review, stakeholder surveys and key informant individual and focus group interviews.
The report was launched at the Palais des Nations in Geneva on World Children’s Day on 20 November 2023.
