Fumiyo Kagawa is undertaking a 2024-2025 consultancy to support UNICEF’s Europe and Central Asia Regional Office (ECARO) in providing technical assistance and guidance to ECARO and its 22 Country Offices (COs)* on integrating climate change into education programming and into support being offered to governments. In helping take forward the ECARO climate change education agenda, she is working with David Selby.
Key tasks involve: mapping CO’s completed and ongoing climate change education initiatives across the region; converting and upgrading the 2023 ECARO Regional Program Brief on Climate Change Education into detailed Programme Guidance for COs; supporting selected COs in taking forward tailored interventions and strategies; helping with draft regional resource mobilization strategies, among other things.
As an important part of the consultancy, Fumiyo is visiting a range of countries. In October/November 2024, she visited Tajikistan and Kyrgyzstan to consult with country officers and their partners and to identify strategic entry points for climate change in the education system. In January 2025, she joined the UNICEF Education Network Meeting in Budapest and presented a first draft of the Regional Program Guide written in cooperation with David Selby. Further visits to the region are forthcoming.
There will be more news soon on this exciting initiative.
